Blank test or "WebView2 Runtime" warning on Windows

ExamQR Exam shows tests with Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. If it is missing or damaged, tests can look normal while answers are NOT recorded. Install it before the exam.

The ExamQR Exam server and candidate apps display tests and print reports with Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, which is part of Windows 10 and 11 on most computers. Without it, a test may still appear, but the candidate's answers are not sent to the server.

How you recognise it

  • On a candidate computer, when the app starts: “This machine does not have Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (or it is damaged). Without it, the test may still appear, but ANSWERS WILL NOT BE RECORDED.”
  • On the exam screen, a red banner: “THIS COMPUTER CANNOT SAVE YOUR ANSWERS (WebView2 Runtime is missing). Stop working and tell the proctor immediately.”
  • On the server's dashboard, under System status: the WebView2 line says “NOT installed — required to view tests / print reports”; or tests and reports open blank; or “Cannot build the print page (WebView is not responding).”

Likely causes

  • WebView2 Runtime was removed (some clean-up tools do this), damaged, or blocked by a school policy.
  • Windows 7 or 8.1: current WebView2 versions don't run there.

Fix it

  1. Do not let a candidate continue on a computer that shows the red banner: move the candidate to another computer and approve the switch on the server.
  2. When the app offers to install WebView2, choose Yes. It uses the installer included with ExamQR (this needs administrator rights) or downloads Microsoft's installer (this needs Internet, about 1–2 minutes).
  3. When you see “WebView2 Runtime installed. Please CLOSE and REOPEN the software before taking the exam.”, close the app completely and open it again.
  4. If the automatic installation fails, the app opens Microsoft's WebView2 download page (developer.microsoft.com/microsoft-edge/webview2). Download the Evergreen Bootstrapper (or, for computers without Internet, the Evergreen Standalone Installer for x64 or x86), run it, then reopen the app.
  5. For a whole computer lab, ask IT to install the Evergreen Standalone Installer on every computer before exam day.
  6. Windows 7: use the Windows 7 build of ExamQR Exam, which carries its own WebView2 (version 109). If you don't have it, ask us through the report button below.
  7. Linux: tests are shown with WebKitGTK instead. If the dashboard shows WebKitGTK as missing, see Installing ExamQR Exam on Linux: missing libraries, AppImage won't start.

If it still doesn't work

Report the problem with the Windows version and the file %LocalAppData%\ExamQRExamClient\crash.log (candidate computer) or %LocalAppData%\ExamQRExam\crash.log (server).
