The candidate app sees the server but can't connect
The server appears in the list, or you typed its address, but connecting fails. The message on screen tells you which of four things to check.
When the candidate app cannot connect, it shows a message under the address box. Each message points to a different cause.
How you recognise it and what to do
- “192.168.1.10 is not responding. Check that the IP address is right, that this computer is on the same network as the server, and that the server's firewall allows ExamQR.” The address is wrong, the computers are on different networks, or the server's firewall blocks ExamQR. Compare the address with Server address on the server's dashboard and check the firewall line under System status (The firewall blocks ExamQR Exam, so candidates can't find the server).
- “192.168.1.10 is on, but no exam server is running on port 5000. The teacher needs to open the exam on the server; then try connecting again.” The computer is reachable but no exam is open on it. On the server, open the exam, then click Connect again.
- “192.168.1.10:8080 is not an ExamQR server. Check the port (default 5000).” The port is wrong. Type only the IP address (port 5000 is then used), or the address exactly as the server's dashboard shows it.
- “Couldn't find a computer named “SERVER-PC”. Enter an IP address instead, for example 192.168.1.10.” Type the IP address shown on the server's dashboard instead of the computer name.
- “Couldn't connect to the server used last time (192.168.1.10). Pick a server from the list or enter the address again.” The server's address has probably changed since last time (routers often hand out a new address after a restart). Pick the server from the list, or type the new address.
- “Cannot connect to this server.” The connection started but did not complete. Wait a few seconds and try again; if it repeats, restart ExamQR Exam on the server and check the network cable or Wi-Fi of the candidate computer.
Also check
- The server opens exams on TCP port 5000. If another program already uses that port, the exam cannot open: see “Port 5000 is in use” when opening an exam on the server.
- Ask the school IT team to give the server computer a fixed IP address (a reservation on the router), so the address candidates use doesn't change between days.
If it still doesn't work
Report the problem with a photo or screenshot of the exact message on the candidate computer and the server address shown on the dashboard.
