Installing ExamQR Exam on Linux: missing libraries, AppImage won't start

Run install.sh from the Linux package: it installs GTK, WebKitGTK and FUSE with apt and adds a menu entry. Without FUSE 2 the AppImage needs --appimage-extract-and-run.

The Linux package of ExamQR Exam contains a Server and a Client folder, each with an AppImage and an install.sh script. Only 64-bit x86 (x86-64) Linux is supported.

How you recognise it

  • Double-clicking the AppImage does nothing, or a terminal shows an error about libfuse.so.2.
  • The app opens but tests and reports are blank; on the server's dashboard, WebKitGTK is shown as not installed.
  • Characters appear as empty boxes.

Fix it

  1. Unzip the package. On the server computer open a terminal in the Server folder and run bash install.sh. Do the same in the Client folder on every candidate computer. The script installs the system libraries with apt (it asks for your sudo password), copies the AppImage to ~/Applications and adds a menu entry.
  2. Without sudo rights, the script skips the libraries. Ask an administrator to run: sudo apt install libgtk-3-0 libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0 libfuse2 libx11-6 libice6 libsm6 libfontconfig1 fonts-liberation (on Ubuntu 24.04 the packages are called libgtk-3-0t64 and libfuse2t64). Candidate computers also need alsa-utils for recording questions.
  3. On a distribution without apt, install the equivalents yourself: GTK 3, WebKitGTK 4.1, FUSE 2, fontconfig and fonts for your language.
  4. If FUSE 2 can't be installed, start the AppImage with --appimage-extract-and-run. The menu entry made by install.sh already does this when libfuse.so.2 is missing.
  5. When the server asks for your password to open the firewall, accept it: see The firewall blocks ExamQR Exam, so candidates can't find the server.
  6. To remove ExamQR Exam, run bash install.sh --uninstall; your exams and results are kept. bash install.sh --uninstall --purge also deletes exams, submissions, licenses and logs, and cannot be undone.

If it still doesn't work

Report the problem with the distribution and version (cat /etc/os-release), the output of install.sh, and the file ~/.local/share/ExamQRExam/crash.log (server) or ~/.local/share/ExamQRExamClient/crash.log (candidate computer).
