Importing a test from Word: no questions found, missing answers, images or equations

ExamQR reads a Word test by the words each line starts with. Most import problems come from five rules: question words, A. B. C. D. options, a marked answer, inline images and the .docx format.

The web app and the ExamQR desktop app find questions and correct answers in a Word file by the words each line starts with. When the file doesn't follow these conventions, questions are missed, options merge, or answers are lost.

How you recognise it

  • Web app: “You must select a Word file with the .docx extension (the older .doc format is no longer supported — open it in Word and save as .docx)”
  • Desktop app: “No questions detected in the file.” or “Could not analyze file: …”
  • Questions are imported without a correct answer, options are joined into the question, or images appear in the wrong place.

Fix it

  1. Save the file as Word Document (.docx): in Word, File, Save As. The older .doc format is not accepted.
  2. Start every question with Question 1: or Question 1. (a space between the word and the number). Use the same question word in the whole test.
  3. Start every option with a capital letter and a full stop: A. B. C. D., one per line or separated with the Tab key (not only spaces). Do not put options in separate table cells.
  4. Mark only the correct option: underline its letter, or make it red. If the test underlines words for emphasis, use red or a highlight for answers instead. If every letter is bold, don't use bold for answers.
  5. Set every image to In Line with Text (right-click the image, Wrap Text). Keep each equation (MathType or Word Equation) in the same paragraph as its question or option.
  6. Compare your file with the sample: sample-question.docx. All rules and tags are in the guide to preparing a test in Word.
  7. A test in another layout, or a PDF: use Convert with AI (it costs credits, see Converting a PDF or Word test with AI fails or misses questions).

If it still doesn't work

Report the problem and attach the Word file (or the part that fails) and a screenshot of what was imported.
