Photographing paper answers with a phone; scanned answer sheets

In an online exam, candidates can photograph handwritten work with a phone and attach it to their answer. ExamQR does not grade scanned bubble answer sheets.

In an online exam, a written answer can include a photo of work done on paper: the candidate clicks Photograph the test in the answer box, scans the QR code with a phone and takes the photo. ExamQR does not read or grade paper bubble answer sheets from a scanner or from photos.

How you recognise it

  • The QR window says “Scan the QR code below with a phone to submit your answers.”, but the phone doesn't open the page, the camera doesn't start, or the photo doesn't appear in the answer.
  • On the phone: “Your device do not have a camera, or Camera permission is NOT ALLOWED on this browser or this website!” or “An error occurred. The network or the server may be having issues.”

Fix it

  1. Scan the QR code with the phone's camera app or a QR reader, then open the link. Or open app.examqr.com on a phone and enter the exam code.
  2. The phone needs Internet (mobile data or Wi-Fi). Allow the browser to use the camera when it asks.
  3. If the camera doesn't start, take the photo with the phone's camera app and use Select file instead.
  4. Take the photo in good light with the whole page in the frame, and hold the phone still: “Taking photo... Hold the device still until finished for the best quality.”
  5. Keep the exam open on the computer: “Keep this page open until the proctor confirms your paper was received.”

Paper tests and scanned answer sheets

To grade a test automatically, candidates take it online (on a computer or their phone) or in a computer lab with ExamQR Exam. If you already have candidates' responses from your own scanner software, the free test analysis tool on ExamQR can analyse them from the answer key and the responses as text.

If it still doesn't work

Report the problem with the phone model, its browser and a screenshot of the message.
